POWERSTEP – policy brief

The recently published Policy Brief of the EU project POWERSTEP explains the potential of the wastewater sector in the energy transition. The studies performed in the scope of the project have demonstrated that the energy potential contained in domestic wastewater can be used more extensively than to date. The concept is based on an innovative filtration process extracting energy-rich organic compounds from the sewage already at the inflow into the sewage treatment plant. By means of sludge digestion biogas is generated which is used to generate electricity. This way of energy generation during wastewater treatment complements the current goals of strengthening the European economy , coupled with securing its energy system and making a significant contribution to Europe’s international climate and sustainable development commitments.
